Ellerbisms 200 – Day five

October 9th, 2009 | by Marc Ellerby

I pretty much owe my “career” in comics to Jamie S. Rich. He gave me my first job when I just finished university and we’ve collaborated on two projects so far, the first being a short story in the Belle and Sebastian anthology and secondly the two volume graphic novel series Love The Way You Love (which you can buy from here).  He is probably most famous for appearing in the margins to Blue Monday yelling insults at its creator Chynna Glugston. At least that’s who I knew him as for years.

He’s joined here by Emi Lennox, whose art I’ve only recently been introduced to, but I totally love it. She has this great OTT style, but always manages to get the right expressions and mood across. Some great cartooning and her webcomic Emi Town is one to watch. Thanks Emi!

Here’s an exchange between Jamie and Anna which I didn’t know about >_<

I’m so sorry, Joelle.

I met Terry Blas on my first trip to San Diego Nerd Prom, which the above strip and below strip both take place. He knows Jamie S. Rich, but you can’t judge a man by the company he keeps,  eh? Terry is a gent, I think I bemused everyone that week with my English sensibilities and phrases like “that’s well ropey”. Ah, well.

Oh and here’s a photo of Terry carrying me in a gigantic Superman bag.

Chris Doherty‘s comics are splendid. For me, he’s one of the under praised stars of the UK Small Press scene. His comics have gorgeous storytelling and crisp linework, and come later next year you can witness it yourself when Blank Slate release his debut graphic novel Video Nasties. Cor, I can’t wait.

Next up is Andrew Waugh who does similar autobio comics. Below is an extract from his new mini comic, Coupledom. I like it a lot, it’s got an Ellerbism-vibe to it doesn’t it?

Here’s Lizz Lunney‘s second Ellerbisms strip…

Last, but by no means least, we have Adam Cadwell. Adam is no stranger to you all, so I won’t go on about who he his, because he should be as familar to you as me and Anna are, seeing has he’s a regular character in not only this strip but his own autobio comic The Everyday. He really does draw a beautiful Anna and I love his LRB200 illustration to bits. Thanks, buddy, it really means a lot to us.

So I guess that’s it for this week’s arsenal of illustrations, strips, words and photos.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR SUBMITTING ARTWORK I LOVE YOU LOTS AND LOTS.

Thanks also to you, the lovely reader, for staying with me for 200 strips. I’m always a little perplexed that anyone actually reads this comic and why they would, but thank you.

As it always seems to be the case with these milestones, I’m unsure of the future of Ellerbisms so won’t say anything as stupid as “here’s to another 200″ as that would be misleading. Instead I’ll just say “here’s to some more comics about me and my lovely girlfriend, until it gets to the point were I just want to stop and draw something different, y’know?”

Ellerbisms 200 – “My hair doesn’t go like that.”

A lot of people ask me what it’s like to be in Ellerbisms and if it’s weird sharing your life with the Internet. The honest answer is yes. Yes, it’s weird seeing your life forever captured with images and funny/sad/uncomfortable incidents shared with people I don’t know, and sometimes worse, shared with people I see on a regular basis. I very rarely limit Marc in what he’s allowed to draw, as it’s his project and not mine. It was only when we started going out we decided to not share it with the readers, in fact, we didn’t share it with many people who knew us (as we were both sort of seeing other people) and awkward things like that… Apart from that, it’s all laid out for anyone to read.

However, it being weird doesn’t mean I don’t find it utterly flattering (even when the strips are less than flattering..) to be such a big part of Ellerbisms. Based on a lot of contributions from other artists and fans, most people see it as “the Marc and Anna comic”, and a lot of you have drawn us together for the 200th celebrations. Marc will often tell people he felt like Ellerbisms came together as a comic with the introduction of my character and the way its developed into not just glimpses of his life, but our life together. Clearly a lot of people agree!

Many times I’ve been overwhelmed by comments left by you, the readers, and I’ve never had a chance to say thank you, so thank you all. This comic wouldn’t still exist if it wasn’t for the continuous appreciation you show, comments and e-mails and interactions at cons. I look forward to meeting more of you at MCM Expo, Thought Bubble and TCAF next year (hopefully!).

Marc asked me to contribute to the celebrations by writing something, or drawing something. I drew a half cow half giraffe, which APPARENTLY was not what he was looking for (surely he’d be fed up with people drawing his face, right? The boy is so self centered…), so instead I’ve collated all of my favourite panels from Ellerbisms past and a brief note on why I love them.

30th June 2007
One of the first strips I’m in, and I’m trying to set Marc up with one of my friends. About a month later I realized I had a massive crush on him and he admitted to the same and that’s the beginning of our story…

9 May 2008
Forever a classic and look at Adams little face! I knew from this moment on, we’d always love Adam, and always laugh at him.

4th Aug 2008
Classic Marc and Anna. I’m clearly angry and Marc’s poor little face, you’d think I’d told him he’s a useless twat. All I did was call him a hypocrite! Geesh.

04 Oct 2008
Some people probably dream of waking up to Adam Hotwell’s hovering head. Believe me, it’s not all that. Marc’s GAH is an internal funny-word and makes me chuckle.
Note: Spiderman bag, RIP.

14 Dec 2008
Marc looooves Maja. He walks around at home saying her name spontaniously. She lives with my mum and dad. In Sweden. It doesn’t make sense, no. I don’t know what goes on in his head sometimes.

Obligatory photo of Maja as she’s just soooooo cute.

28 Dec 2008
Sometimes Marc gets so angry with me he physically shuts me up. Apparently this makes my eyes go funny.

03 Jan 2009
Everyone sniffs their boyfriends, right? Right?! No? Oh. (He smells lovely by the by. Most of the time)

14 Feb 2009
The constant disappointment…

NO DATE??!
I love my parents. Even when they bust in on my iChat time. My favourite thing about this panel is my mum holding the cats under her arms. They are as much part of the family as the humans.

05 March 2009
- Seriously?! Punching a girl when she’s making breakfast? Marc was being particularly pesty that morning. Love the look of surprise on my face.

7 March 2009
Oh guess what, I’m angry again.. You can tell Marc has done/said something based on his massive grin, he probably found it hilarious and I found it offending.

Now, don’t say I don’t give my lady what she wants, lo and behold here is her giraffe/cow picture as mentioned earlier, complete with commentary.
