Ellerbisms 200 – Day two

I don’t need to introduce John Allison to you. You should already be familar with his mega famous webcomic Scary Go Round and his mega new and shiny webcomic Bad Machinery. If you’re not then, you need some schooling, yo.

I’ve admired John’s drawing shapes and designs for a while now and I’m amazed how overflowing with creativity he is. I mean, there’s creative and then there’s John. At cons he’ll be sitting there drawing away coming up with five or six new comic ideas or drawings of me and Cadwell with key swords. He’s amazing and I’m honoured that he’s drawn me and the missus.

The first of two comic strips today comes from an old friend who goes under the pseudonym of Cowface. For those who have been following my career for a while may remember a comic anthology I put together called Eyesore, which blossomed from the illustration course of Kent Institute of Art & Design, Maidstone. The third issue has sadly become the equivalent of Chinese Democracy, Smile, that third Glassjaw album and may or may not ever come out.

Anyway, Cowface was one of the highlights of Eyesore and his illustrations credits have graced the pages of lads mag FHM. I went to his wedding reception last year and got lost thanks to a cab driver taking us to the wrong bloody venue but I’ll save that story for potentially hilarious comic. Thanks for the gorgeous comic, Mr Face!

Next up we have a comic featuring everyone’s favourite blow up dinosaur, Dracula by the ever so nice Ste Hitchen. Ste does a lovely journal comic called The Ste-Regular and is worth checking out. A new print edition has just come out, so if you see him at a con you should totally nab one.

Ellerbisms 200 – Day one

As promised, to coincide with the 200th edition of Ellerbisms this week sees strips, art, et cetera based on…well…me.

First up is every one’s favourite tiny but violent comic artist Lizz Lunney.  Lizz has appeared in the strip before (starting from here) and so you should be already familiar with her comics about depressed cats, chucklesome burgers, fat pigeons and leaning rabbits.  I love Lizz’s stuff so much, every book she brings out sends me to hysterics, including her newest venture Grizzly Bear Thursday, a blog where people draw big ol grizzlies.

Anyway, this is Lizz’s take on an old favourite. Make sure to come back on Friday for a second Lunney strip!

Next up we have Proper Comic Artist Emma Vieceli. Cor, her art’s graced the pages of The DFC,  Phonogram The Singles Club, she’s illustrated two manga shakespeare books for Self Made Hero; Hamlet and Much To Do About Nothing, illustrated a story in that gigantic-can kill a man if dropped from a great height-Tori Amos comic anthology and is a total sweetheart.

I’ve been threatening to put Emma into Ellerbisms for years now, she does come out with some gems, but ultimately could never fit them into the strip. So, without further ado we present EMMABISMS (hahahahaha).

Last up for today is Matt Sheret. Matt’s a really good friend and again has appeared in the strip a few times, although has only spoken once, I think? Which is strange as he never shuts up with sage advice. I first met Matt through those horrible Phonogram men at the last proper Bristol con and it’s been a joyous friendship ever since. Matt’s primarily a writer so I asked him to write a little something about Ellerbisms and like Lizz above, he chose to reflect on our time at the Swedish Small Press Expo. We were like Voltron once, and young, drunk on yellow labels and grinning through the cold. Rolling in the back of my head, I remember, the sound of voices whispering “Vi er orden och bilderna,” because prose and panel borders had taken us beautiful places.

_________________________ I stumbled after deer as we wandered home. And it was home, for a few days.

I think of Lizz pouting for the camera; I think of waking up to Cadwell in a hotbox, sun on the blinds, the sad words “Bye, bye Jeffrey Brown,” set to burst out of his lips; of Liz shouting over Euro-pop “I think I’m only now just starting to know the people I want to know for the rest of my life,” and how very right she was.

__________________ I think of Anna in the old town, and with effort I can see her long black sleeves, her canvas shoes and another hard-to-draw haircut that Marc will never ever get right enough.

I think of the timing, of course. ________________ I think of Marc’s face looking out over the city, eyes of tears and too-recent memories, his mouth forming the words “I can’t believe we’re in Stockholm, Matt,” for a fourth time, “I can’t believe I’m here!”

So, Thursday’s Ellerbism was a lot to take in, not just for me and Anna it seems, but also for you guys.

Both me and Anna want to say a big thank you to everyone who has contacted us over the weekend, left a comment or sent a text asking if we’re okay. We are okay. Really. I’m not just saying that, but Ellerbisms is on a 2 month delay so it’s in our past, even if for the both of us, it will probably always still be there.

What’s blown us away the most has been the response from my readers. Most of you are strangers, I’ve never met you and will probably never meet you, though your response has warmed us. Your actual concern for our well being has really touched us and we really appreciate it. I was going to reply to each comment individualy but didn’t want to saturate it by saying the same thing over and over.

I also want to say with that the next week or so the strip isn’t going to get any lighter. I’m not apologising for this but I think some of my readers read this strip for the pure comedic nature and well, it’s not going to change back that quickly. There is funny coming up though, Cadwell came to stay a little while after, but if you don’t think you can handle this much darkness I’ve started putting up new and improved Polar Opposites strips on my livejournal. Polar Opposites is my penguin joke comic about two penguins that don’t get along and they live in the south POLE. Some could say they’re POLAR opposites. HAHAHA.

There was a great article by Elle Dee at Storming The Tower which goes over the strip in question that echoes what a few people have been saying.

I’ve written and illustrated a story in the brand new Image Comics anthology “This Is A Souvenir” which is out now. If you click the above picture, you can look at a 7 page preview. This is what I love about comics. Marc Ellerby’s been sat on the sidelines for a long time now making his fabulous mini comics of love and penguins (not together – see the review here) and watching as his friends get big time gigs (yes Gillen and McKelvie – I’m looking at you). But here’s the book that should, if there’s any justice in the world, make Ellerby famous.

Chloe is out now from my webstore. I’m currenty working on issue 2 which should drop for Thought Bubble in November.

Samlat

I’ll be appearing at the Swedish Small Press Expo this weekend at the Serieteket in the Kulturhuset in Stockholm. It’s a free event and I’m sharing a space with Adam Cadwell and Lizz Lunney.

To celebrate our first international show as a unit we’re giving away a free compilation. It’s limited to just a little over 100 copies and I highly doubt we’ll have any to bring home with us but we might do something like this again in the future? If you were wondering, “samlat” translates as “collected” and “gratis” means “free”.
